In the early part of the nineteenth century William Ropes, originally from Salem, Mass., was engaged in the commission business in Boston under the firm names of Ropes and Pickman, Ropes and Ward, and with William Reed. In 1832 he moved to St. Petersburg, Russia, establishing the firm of William Ropes and Company. Information about William's activities are detailed in the letters, covering the years 1810-1841. There are account books for William's father, Samuel of Salem and William's brother, Hardy, who moved from Salem to Boston. A long series of Hardy's diaries, from 1819 to 1875, are also included.
